Canon ixus mini review by Peter Smith
| My Overall Rating: |
On the whole I am very happy with the quality of photos the IXUS 130 has produced. Looking through my outdoor photos sharpness is some way above average for such a small digital camera. This is true of a variety of zoom positions. I am especially impressed by the sharpness showing in my second photo where the lens is zoomed all the way out. The camera is able to retain sharpness up to the edges of a shot. The IXUS 130 also does well in bringing out detail in areas of light shade.

As with other Canon digital cameras I like the contrast showing in the colours. The skies are about the right shade of blue in my eyes and I like the deeper greens of the foliage. As with most digital cameras there are one or two imperfections. My third outdoor shot is darker than it should be. In my second photo there is also a small amount of purple fringing showing around the edges of the trees. This is worth taking into account if you are planning to produce extra large prints.
Portraits
For my outdoor portrait I would like to have seen greater saturation of the colours. I think extra colour would improve the photo. The indoor portrait with flash works very well. The lighting remains quite subtle. This ensures that there is still colour showing in the skin tones. The light is very evenly distributed too. This ensures all areas are properly lit with no dark corners and no dark areas in the hair. With flash turned off the IXUS 130 does well again. There are good levels of detail showing and noise is controlled well.
Macro, Colours and Noise
For me the macro shot is the best effort from the IXUS 130. Although it is unlikely that close up shots would be high up on the agenda for anyone on the lookout for a pocket camera the quality of the shoot is very impressive. The sharpness, definition and detail of the photo are outstanding. I like the colours the IXUS 130 produces in the main. One or two photos could benefit from a little extra colour, but the photos retains a natural look. There were no serious issues with noise. In fact the IXUS 130 does well in keeping noise under control.
Summary
The IXUS 130 does well for a camera of this small size. There are one or two small issues, but I found nothing that would put me off buying. Sharpness levels are impressive.
“I’ve had this camera for about a month. I wanted a good compact to take to places I would not take my digital SLR. I could not be more pleased with it. Perfect for pointing and shooting and the video is excellent although it uses up battery fast. It is very small not much bigger than a mobile phone so fits easily in your pocket. It is a very well built and solid little camera. I dropped it and it bounced several times over some rocks. It had a few little dents and scratches but it still works perfectly. I would not hesitate to recommend to someone looking for a reasonably priced, very easy to use compact. It won’t replace my digital SLR but it takes high quality images and video and is a lot more portable.”

Smart Shutter mode brings you a new Smile and Wink Detection Self-Timer that makes taking group photos and self-portraits easier than ever – and with no rush. Once the shot has been set up, the camera records the number of faces detected in the frame when the shutter is depressed and the self timer started – it then waits not only for an extra face to get in the frame but for that face to wink or smile before releasing the shutter automatically. You can set the camera to take the shot anytime from 2-10 seconds after the wink or smile for the perfect picture every time.

A world of advantages with Canon technology
The Optical Image Stabiliser automatically |
Rich razor-sharp images – every time
The lens is the most important part of any imaging device and all Canon cameras incorporate lenses designed and manufactured by Canon – lenses based on over 60 years of experience for outstanding results.
The outstanding quality of Canon lenses is underscored by their use in most broadcast applications. For example programs like Coronation Street, Casualty and X Factor and nature documentaries like The Blue Planet and Life, as well as the majority of outside broadcasts in the UK, are all recorded using Canon’s state-of-the-art broadcast lenses.
Canon’s market-leading Optical Image Stabiliser is a lens-shift system that automatically detects and corrects camera shake, whilst ensuring outstanding image quality. It allows handheld shooting at longer focal lengths and in lower light conditions without blur, giving you steady, crisp, brilliant images you’ll be proud to shoot and share. Developed initially for Canon’s EOS Digital SLR cameras in 1987 it is the fastest in-lens image stabiliser available on the market and ensures the stylish IXUS range has a top quality pedigree.
Fast, intelligent processing
Canon’s most advanced image processor, DIGIC 4, lies at the heart of every Canon digital camera and delivers exceptional processing speeds. It also makes possible the camera’s intelligent evolved Face and Object Detection technologies and Canon’s i-Contrast feature.
